Technology: My Reliance

I never realised until I came back from the toilet how much I have relied on technology over the past few days and where I would be without it. Do not ask me why it was after the toilet I realised this, I have been asking myself the same question since I started writing this post. This happens a lot more often than you would think, do not judge me. Just before I had to look up the television guide. Since it is the holidays I was feeling a little lazy so instead of getting up and finding the paper television guide I sort-of, kinda searched it up on the internet. Lucky I did though otherwise I would have missed the Season 5 premiere of Glee. It's actually pretty good except for the fact that it is making this quick post take a long time to write. I am a professional procrastinator after-all.

Yesterday I was in the city with Mum while we were waiting for something. Getting in there from where we were was no big problem with Mum just hopping on the first tram she saw. Later Mum revealed she was under the delusion that any tram will just continue in that direction and so any place you want to go in that direction you will get there. Luckily, we made it to the Queen Victoria Market and Melbourne Central without any trouble. I finally caught on to what Mum was doing when she kept pushing a certain road and a tram stop we could take. Luckily I had my phone with access to the internet so I could look it up on the Public Transport Victoria Website. Then, since we had to wait some more I also looked up movie sessions on my phone while we were getting a drink. Without that we would not have seen White House Down (Grown Ups 2 was not playing at the time we needed) and probably would have walked around the city aimlessly with Mum continuing to stress me out by pushing certain routes. I would also get incredibly bored without Facebook, Twitter and Blogger by my side. So, as you can see, I have a heavy reliance on technology and without it I would be lost. I would miss the majority of my television shows (not such a bad thing), get lost a lot (especially in the city) and be incredibly bored (well, more than normal).

RSPCA Million Paws Walk

Today was the RSPCA's (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) Million Paws Walk which is where dog owners come together to go for a walk (usually 3 kilometres so it isn't too much) with their dogs. Hence the name, Million Paws Walk. It is really a great experience and there are so many different breeds of dog. The following is Sandy's story (our dog) and his experience on the RSPCA's Million Paws Walk. All the photos, except the following logo, were taken by me.

The day started off with Sandy coming into my room really excited and waking me up. The reason he was excited wasn't because he was going to the Million Paws Walk (although that would have worked out really well if he was) because there was no way he could have known we were going there. He was really just excited because he got to come inside to wake us up. By the time we were ready to go he was already waiting at the front door and was getting more excited (and impatient) for every minute that passed.

Sandy still had no idea what was going on and still believed we were going on a walk. We were going on a walk but he didn't think it would also involve a car ride. Sandy is really a big fan of car rides and I think he really just loves the fact that he is in an enclosed space with people. The downside of this is that whenever we stopped he would get very excited thinking we were getting out to go on a walk. This was annoying when you were sitting next to him and it was only a stop light. By the time we got to the venue where we were doing the walk Sandy was getting really impatient. Then he saw all the other dogs and he got REALLY impatient. Seriously, it was very hard sitting next to him in the car.

Sandy was really excited when we got out of the car and we registered. We arrived at 9am and the walk didn't start until 10am and so we had a look around at the different stalls and purchased a new Million Paws Walk Coat for Sandy (we still have his old one but we use it for rainy days). It looked good on him and it warmed him up because it was still cold in the morning. For the next hour we waited and Sandy socialised with the other dogs. It was really good and Sandy was very excited.

Finally the walk started and Sandy was even more excited (somehow that was possible) and his head seemingly moved in every direction all at once. The start of the walk was actually sort of funny (in a disgusting way) because the start of the walk was where every dog that had to poo, did. This meant that the start of the walk stunk but Sandy didn't care, he was too excited to care. The worst part was when the dog owners let the dog go on the path and it was like mine bombs all over the place. It was disgusting but Sandy was really enjoying himself and it really was a nice day.

Sadly the walk had to come to an end and Sandy was severely disappointed but it was still fun to walk around some more and look at some more stalls. Sandy also got to do some more socialising and he was having a lot of fun. The finish line was sad for Sandy to see but it really was just a sign as Sandy is still enjoying himself now as he is sleeping off the walk. Sandy really enjoyed his day and the RSPCA really put together a great day and I cannot wait until next year.

Community

Community (No, I do not mean the popular TV show) is something most people classify as history, no longer a part of today's multicultural environment. I beg to differ and I believe that Community is still alive today and I have seen examples of this everywhere. By Community I am not referring to buildings or any physical. I am talking about the social links between people in an area.

Just recently I had the pleasure of seeing this, just yesterday in fact. As you may have read yesterday I went to Relay for Life and there were so many people united to raise money for the Cancer Council. There were just so many people and there was such a good vibe around that it wasn't hard to see the sense of community.

There were so many different teams there, and they were all happy to be there even though they could have been spending their weekend doing something else. There were Fire Brigades, School Groups, Paramedics, work groups and other community groups who all had busy tents and full teams. Then there was also all the teams who also sold raffle tickets, food, lollies (yeah, I know lollies are food) and those beads and necklaces and everybody was smiling and were talking to other teams like they had known each other for years. So there was a really vibrant sense of community at this event and like all other Relay for Life events that I had attended. I really enjoyed my time and that was partly due to the sense of community I felt at every part of the track, it really gives you hope for the world.
