You Are Not Forgotten

Welcome back to another post here on Daily Lukey. Before I get started on my Weird News Tuesday post I want to apologise for missing so many days previously due to homework, socialising and other commitments that meant this blog was neglected for a few days. I am super sorry about this but welcome to the VCE years. As the one year anniversary of this blog comes around (very soon) I am trying to keep this blog as updated as possible but sometimes it just is not possible when you have a lot of VCE homework. Anyway, on with some weird news to get back into the swing of things. This week I am using the news site Reuters to find some weird news. As you know, I use a different site each week. We begin the post with the story of a woman in Michigan who was dead for six years but was only found once the bills stopped getting paid. For six years, the lawn was mowed and all the bills were paid so no one found the lady's dead body in the seat of her car in the garage. This was because she had an automatic bill-paying system set up, had stopped work in 2008, and had her neighbour cut the grass. It is a really strange story that makes you wonder what her life must have been life to have not being noticed missing for a full six years.

In Las Vegas a 'too drunk' gambler is suing a Casino for a $500,000 debt he accrued. I doubt that the case would go far but there is a dilemma here as the man arrived drunk yet the casino provided him with free alcoholic beverages (as usual in a Casino). This raises the question as to whether the Casino should have not provided the man with the drinks or that the man is in control as they did not force the drinks down his throat. An example of how slow the United States is in news is that they have only just written a story on the Darryn Lyons, 'iconic' Australia Paparazzo who became the mayor of Geelong. It must take a while for this news to cross the oceans. According to a new study (they do some studies on some pretty weird things), investors prefer business pitches from men. However, further than this, they also prefer handsome men. Apparently they are more likely to put money into a business if the pitcher is a handsome man. A Sicilian 'Space Program' (after you know what they have done, you realise how loosely this term can be applied) has launched a model cannolo (a cream stuffed pastry roll apparently symbolic of the Italian island) into the stratosphere. For some reason, this is what the Sicilian Space Program (again, I use the title loosely) deems necessary.  A drunken groom caused the emergency landing of a flight after he had a drunken fight with his bride on the way to their honeymoon. I know everyone wants their honeymoon to be unforgettable but when is too much just too much? Citizens of Rio de Janeiro have fully understood the after-effects of a party after their annual Rio Carnival left the city in a state of utter garbage, literally. If the hang-overs were not bad enough, the rubbish piling the streets certainly is. Workers at a funeral home in Mississippi were shocked when the body they were about to embalm suddenly kicked to try and escape the body bag. This would have been an incredibly scary experience for everyone involved (just saying). Police in Stockholm had to disperse an angry crowd after a job office mistakenly called 61,000 people for a recruitment meeting. That is one big mistake that I am pretty sure is going to lead to someone losing their job or being demoted.

There is some pretty weird things going on in our world (I have not even mentioned the Malaysia airlines flight that went missing). See you tomorrow (hopefully)!

Pandora's Box

There are many stories about the infamous Pandora's Box and what it holds. However, despite this infamous object's fame, very few people know much about Pandora's Box and its origins. Look no further for this post will aim to inspire you and inform you about the mystical mystery (yeah, I went there) of Pandora's Box. Pandora's Box is an artifact in Greek Mythology, taken from the myth of Pandora's creation in Hesiod's Works and Days which I think is some Greek mythology story. The "box" is actually a large jar which was given to Pandora and it contained all the evils of the world. You can see how such an object would appeal to such a wide variety of people and how it can be a source of great story telling. A popular phrase (that I have never heard of) which is "to open Pandora's box" means to do a little innocent action that has far-reaching and severe consequences. I do not know why that is important but it is, so deal with it.

In Greek mythology, Pandora was said to be the first woman on Earth. Zeus ordered Hephaestus, the god of craftsmanship, to create her and so he did. Athena then clothed her, Aphrodite gave her beauty and Hermes gave Pandora speech. In retaliation of Prometheus stealing fire from heaven, Zeus gave Prometheus' brother, Epimetheus, Pandora. In doing so he also gave Pandora a jar with strict instructions not to open it under any circumstances. Of course, due to her curiosity, Pandora opened the jar and all evil contained within escaped and spread over the Earth. Before Pandora had the chance to shut the jar, all of the evil had already escaped leaving only the one thing that lay at the bottom: the Spirit of Hope named Elpis. Then even Hope escaped into the World. So after this the world was full of every kind of evil, but it was also full of Hope. Pandora's Box has become something of a modern obsession for story-tellers due to its rich history and the possibilities it holds. Some people see the evil as truth and so that by opening the box an unimaginable number of truths, some good and some bad, would be let free into the world. Others see Pandora's Box as something which contains all the secrets of our world and existence and once found and opened our new lives can begin. The point of Pandora's box, however, is not the story. Rather, Pandora's Box is merely a vessel in which the ancient Greeks believed that evil and hope entered the world. It is a nice story.

Science and Keeping Young

Sorry for the late post today!

So, Science Science Science! I spent most of tonight actually completing an assignment on the TAC's Wipe off 5 Campaign and how it is effective where we had to incorporate our own data regarding reaction times, breaking distances and stopping distances. This was not as long as it could have been as our class had already handed in the assignment but the teacher found out that every other class got a rubric for the task but we hadn't which meant she gave us back our raw score based on the rubric and we had an extra week to complete our task via the rubric. This was great but now I am so SICK of the TAC and their "WIPE OFF 5" CAMPAIGN! It is a good campaign and it is quite interesting but this assignment ruined it for me. Anyway, I enjoyed doing it and now it is 10pm and I am writing this post quickly before going to bed. The worst part with this is that we had to submit it using this online thing called eWorkspace and the Dropbox (but don't worry about what that is if you don't know) but of course it wasn't submitting the document so now I'll have to do it tomorrow morning before class. Anyway, glad that is over.

On the way home from my Methods Tutoring we drove past a park that was empty except for this one old man. Normally I would just be like "Ok, what else is going on?" but it was what this guy was doing that attracted my attention. This elderly man in the deserted park was atop of the slide after climbing up the steps and was about to go down the slide. I didn't get to see if he actually went down the slide because we passed it pretty quickly but that was still the highlight of my day! I mean, my Dad thought I was cracking it because I couldn't stop laughing... Anyway, I guess that must have made him feel young but imagine that, an elderly citizen enjoying a ride on the slide at the park.
