Fun with Friends

I know this seems like a post about a children's story but it is not, it is very real. It stares you straight in the face when you dare not look. It is the voice in the edge of your mind. That vision out of the corner of your eye. Basically, it is the truth and nothing but the truth (plus a little bit of imagination). Sometimes people go through days and wish it to end every second. However, sometimes we have those days where time flies and we just want it to stop and slow down so we can enjoy it. Even the views of different people can change how they experience time and how this wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey world works (points for whoever knows where this is from). Friends can make time more enjoyable and without them time can go very slowly.

Today was one such occasion where I can say that friends made time go faster and was made better than if I was alone. Today I went to the Geelong Show to celebrate a friend's birthday. Because his Father knew the people who owned a lot of the rides we went on a lot of them and paid nothing. It was actually a lot of fun and if I had not being with my friends I would never have had such great friends to keep me company and to talk to about random stuff (random is always fun). If they had not been there the six hours we spent at the show would not have been half as enjoyable and I was not on the rides all the time (in fact, the majority we were just walking around). On the way home, however, we got stuck helping the Father's friend with a truck. This took a lot of time so instead of getting home at 6pm I got home at 8:10pm. I know you are probably thinking that two and a half hours would be boring but you would be wrong as we talked the whole time about a variety of random things. There was never any awkward silences. It was a lot of fun and I know that without them the time would have just dragged on and I would have had nothing to do. So you can see why I see friends as being important and why I know that they make time move at a better pace.

Friends are important so never take them for granted. See you tomorrow!

Boredom

Boredom reigns down upon us all from time to time and we are left helpless to stop it. Boredom comes when we are at our most vulnerable and can often make minutes stretch into hours and hours into days. Such times as these includes the time many students are experiencing right now which is, of course, Holidays! Holidays, though great, are major causes of boredom as people find themselves with nothing to do. Of course, boredom can come in waves and you may find yourself in utter bliss one day and absolute boredom the next. Personally, I experience boredom quite a lot and have some techniques to overcome such boredom which sometimes can seem unending. However, some boredom I can not control and one must suffer through it to make it into the blissful times. Boredom, like rain, really should go, go, go away and come again another day.

The best weapon we have to defend ourselves against boredom is activity. Without it we would be lost in a world where time seems to stop. Of course, during long periods of freedom (such as Holidays) people can often run out of things to do so the best way to overcome this is to spread activities out over the full length of the holidays rather than being very busy at the start and then very bored at the end. However, some activities will lead to boredom and should be done as soon as possible if they must be done. Holiday homework is a good example of this because if you plan to spread it out over time you are going to become really bored over the entirety of your holidays. If you complete all your homework at the start of the holidays however then you will still have a bit of boredom at the start of the holidays but then you will have more free time towards the end to break up the boredom. Going out with friends is always a good remedy to boredom as it is very hard to be bored when you are with friends (unless you are in school listening or watching something incredibly boring {like a droning teacher or a dreadful documentary}). Maybe there is a movie or television show you like to watch and maybe you need to go shopping to get what you need like the DVD or maybe you want to rent the movie. Either way you have created an outing and an activity which will break up your boredom. So, however horrifying boredom may seem, just remember those simple ideas and maybe even add a few of your own. This way you will be prepared whenever the next wave hits.

Fanfiction

Continuing on with the theme of writing I just want to point out fan fiction to you. Fan fiction is a story (often about well-known people like celebrities, books, movies or television shows) that is written by fans [just in case you did not get that from the prefix]. Some of them are really well-written and very descriptive. They can often give you an insight into someone else's interpretation of a book and may even shed light on something subtle you may have missed. Sometimes it even continues the story the way fans want it to. The best part about it is that these people who write it are doing it for free and so are writing what they are passionate about. It really is amazing.

Sometimes when I'm bored I might just Google Hunger Games fan fiction or something similar and thousands of results pop up. There are whole sites like http://www.fanfiction.net/ which are full of millions (literally millions) of stories written by fans. Sometimes they can continue a story you may have really loved. Sometimes they are good and sometimes they are really bad. Fan fiction is just one of many ways for people to get their writing out there and some of it is publishing quality. The best part about it, as I already said, is that these people are writing it purely because they want to and are passionate about it. It really brings out the true creativity of a person because it isn't a chore and they can stop whenever they want because it is their writing, their rules and what they want. Some people do not like writing blogs and so turn to the casual writing of fan fiction.

In the world of fan fiction anything goes. There are no publishers or editors telling you to change anything. It is purely what you want when you want it. It also allows people to express themselves in writing and enjoy writing stories about their favourite book characters. Stories like this would never otherwise be published because it would be copyright on the original author of the source series. Some fan fictions out-shine their original counterparts and can even create a mix of two different series others would not think of. A great example of this is "The Potter Games" (as pictured above) which is a mix of Harry Potter and  The Hunger Games. There is actually a site called The Potter Games (I'm not sure if it is the same thing as pictured above) where you read a paragraph and at the bottom there are choices you make and each choice continues on to a different story line so it is like one of those choose-your-own-adventure books. That is one of the advantages of the online world, you can easily do this just by creating a hyperlink to a new page. It is also one of the reasons I love fan fiction. If you have not ever read any fan fiction then I really recommend you should because they are fantastic!
