The History of Kokoda

As you probably know by now I am in Kokoda right now. Well, actually I am on a flight to Papua New Guinea right now but this is a scheduled post so anyway. Before I get into anything else regarding Kokoda it is important to understand the history of the place. However, I am no historian and no scholar on the matter so I have found this information on the trekking company site. You can find the source by clicking here or by following this link:

Kokoda Historical Overview

More than 600 Australians were killed and some 1680 wounded during perhaps the most significant battle fought by Australians in World War II.

Forced to repel a Japanese invasion force, which landed at Gona on the north coast of Papua on 21 July 1942, the Australians fought in appalling conditions over the next four months. The Japanese objective was to capture Port Moresby, the main Australian base in New Guinea, by an overland strike across the Owen Stanley Range. The most direct way across these rugged mountains was by a jungle pathway known as the Kokoda Track.

During the next four months, until 16 November 1942, Australian soldiers fought the Japanese, first to keep them from reaching Port Moresby and then to push them back over the Owen Stanleys to their north coast strongholds at Buna, Gona and Sanananda.

In late July 1942, as the Japanese advanced towards Kokoda village, they were engaged by forward elements of the Papuan Infantry Battalion and the Australian 39th Infantry Battalion. Despite the Australians' stubborn resistance, Kokoda fell to the larger Japanese force and by 27 August the Australians and the few Papuan troops who had stayed with them had been forced back to Isurava. Reinforcements were sent from Port Moresby: first the 53rd Battalion, which protected a side-track behind Isurava and then the veteran 2/14th and 2/16th Battalions, which had previously served in the Middle East.

At Isurava, in the last days of August, the 39th and the 2/14th Battalions, with support further back from the 2/16th and 53rd Battalions, were able to temporarily hold the Japanese during an intense five-day action. Three days into the battle, on 29 August, in the face of yet another enemy assault, Private Bruce Kingsbury, 2/14th Battalion, was killed as he rushed forward with his Bren gun, driving back the enemy in a determined counter-attack. He was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross, the first VC awarded during the New Guinea campaigns.

Throughout September, the Australian units withdrew down the Kokoda Track, being joined by the 2/27th Battalion. They made further stands against the Japanese at Eora Creek, Templeton's Crossing, Efogi, Mission Ridge and Ioribaiwa. Allied airmen dropped supplies and made repeated attacks on the enemy's supply lines. During those gruelling days, the Papuan men employed as carriers played a vital role in the battle. They carried supplies forward for the troops and then, as the number of troops who were wounded or fell sick increased, carried back to safety those who were unable to walk.

By 16 September, after more troops had come forward from Port Moresby and dug into a defensive position at Imita Ridge, the Japanese were exhausted. They had been forced to fight hard to cross the mountains and had run out of many supplies. Following setbacks on other battlefields against Australian and American forces, which robbed them of further reinforcements, the Japanese on the Kokoda Track were ordered to withdraw. As Australian patrols pushed forward of Imita Ridge on 28 September, they found that the enemy had slipped away.

During the next six weeks, the Japanese fell back over the mountains. They were pursued by troops of the 25th Brigade, comprising the 2/25th, 2/31st and 2/33rd Battalions and the 16th Brigade, comprising the 2/1st, 2/2nd and 2/3rd Battalions, along with the 3rd Battalion and men from medical and supply units. Significant actions were fought at Templeton's Crossing, where it took more than a week of hard and costly fighting for the 25th Brigade to push back the enemy, and at Eora Creek where the 16th Brigade also doggedly attacked enemy strongpoints to slowly make ground.

The Australians were plagued by supply shortages that increased the difficulties of jungle warfare. Finally, on 2 November, Kokoda was retaken. The Australians had one more tough battle to fight at Oivi-Gorari, where the Japanese were determined to make another stand, before they were able to finish the advance over the mountains. By 18 November the Australians had reached the Kumusi River. The battle for the Kokoda Track was over.

I hope you enjoyed your history lesson! See you tomorrow.

Holidays and Kokoda

It is coming and I know it. The nerves are building and so is the excitement. It still is not going to hit me that I am doing the Kokoda track until I actually start it. Still, it does not mean I am not nervous about it. There is just so much that is happening now that the Holidays have started and I guess I am just glad that I have already finished all my homework or else I would have something else to stress about. Still, how many people can say that they have done the Kokoda track. Wow, that was a really random introduction so I am sorry for that but after all it is a random thought Saturday post so forgive my random musings.

I think I said yesterday that I was getting a start on those Kokoda posts and I have. I have already written posts for every day from the 15th to the 20th so there are six posts right there. Now I just need to write some more for the rest of the time and then maybe a shorter post on the 26th (Saturday) and a Doctor Who post for the 27th (Sunday) so that I have the weekend to recuperate without having to worry about the blog. I know that if I do not write those posts than there will be no post on those days. I can tell that that is how it would play out. You will have to wait and see what each post is about (they are all different but all related to my Kokoda experience) but I do hope you will enjoy it. The series of posts related to my personal experiences (which are the majority of them so far) are titled "My Kokoda Journey" and I even made a picture for it to appear in each one of those posts. The only posts that are not about my personal experience is a post on the History of the Kokoda track and a post on the story that my group wrote for our group presentation to the leadership group. The rest of the posts are all going to be about my experience. Well, at least the ones I have written so far. I do not think there is anything else I can write about the Kokoda experience that is not related to my journey so at this point it should be interesting. You will have to wait for the 17th to see the picture I created as the 16th is the post on the history of the Kokoda track. They are all scheduled to be released at 12:30am (00:30 [24-hour time]) each day so they should all be live by the time you want to read them. Anyway, aside from Kokoda it is also the holidays which is incredibly exciting! It is great to just be able to have a break from homework and school for a while. This is why I wanted to get all my homework done straight away so that I could have a break between school and Kokoda. I am sorry for a lot of posts being about Kokoda as of late but it is a big part of my life right now so I am sorry for fixating on it. However, this is my blog and as much as I write it for you guys to read it is mine and the story of my life. I will not apologise for writing what I want unless it is completely outrageous which I doubt it will ever be.

Enjoy the rest of your holidays! See you tomorrow.

Scheduling Woes

So sorry for another short post given it is only 6:30 but my Methods exam is tomorrow and I need to study! Not to mention all the other subjects later this week. That is why I scheduled two posts over the last two days (Friday and Saturday). Generally, I say that I love scheduling as it gives me the freedom to have days off writing for this blog so I can focus on other things or just relax. However, sometimes scheduling does not work so well and little problems arise. You may have noticed a lack of a post yesterday. Well, you can blame scheduling. For some reason it did not post when it should have and now when I go to look for it, it seems to have disappeared as if it was deleted. It was a really 'interesting' one too on The Great Firewall of China which I spent a whole Semester studying for my individual humanities research project. However, you will just have to wait until later in the year or early next year to learn about this 'feat' of the modern world. Anyway, so because of what happened there was no post up yesterday. Generally when this happens I just write another post and schedule it so that it should have come out yesterday. Because of this, blogger posts it with yesterday's date and the time I choose. This is something I generally do when a technical issue such as this occurs but this time I thought I owed it to you all not to lie. Also, I did not want to spend more time than I needed to away from studying for these exams. I will hopefully see you tomorrow with some 'witty' observations from my first exam.

See you tomorrow!

Gullible

So hooray guys, today I was organised! I wrote two posts at once which was yesterday's and today's. I wrote them both last night because I knew that I would not be able to write another one tonight. Why is that you may ask. Well, tonight is my Year 10 Formal which is going to be so great, I can not wait (although when this post comes out it will probably be about to start or something). So in between making posters for my fundraiser, scrolling through my Facebook news feed and watching YouTube videos I decided to write those two posts. I am pretty proud of myself as this means I do not have to worry about hurriedly typing one on the way home on the iPad because they all turn out pretty bad as it takes a lot longer to type. So we all know someone who does not think twice about what they are being told and takes everything as fact (seriously, did you see that change in subject?). This is their story (*cue "dun dun" Law & Order sound*).

Sometimes this can be great as they do not question you even when you are obviously wrong or missing something important. It is also great as it leads to a lot of funny (and sometimes mean) gags at their expense. I mean, how many times have you fallen for "Gullible is written on the ceiling"? For some this occurs too often and it has become a problem. It can also be a problem as you have to be extra careful with what you say around them because they are not going to know if you are joking or not. Sometimes even sarcasm is lost on these people. It happens to the best of us and we are just left there looking like idiots. However, sometimes you need to draw a fine line between gullible and argumentative. There just comes a point when you are so not gullible that you question and argue with everything someone says to you. This is often the most annoying trait someone can have as you can not possibly have a normal conversation with them.

Being gullible is often not a very fun thing (ignore my horrible sentence structure please), see you tomorrow!

No Politics Today

So today I decided I would give you all a break from the 'boring' world of politics as it is often referred to as being. Of course, as I may have demonstrated through some of the political parties Australia has to offer, this is not true for all of politics. Such an assumption would be absurd and tantamount to stereotyping. Actually, it is stereotyping. Not all Politics is boring obviously political parties like the Australian Sex Party and the Coke and Bubblers Party contradict this statement. Also, have you seen parliament? It is like a court-room drama with one side fighting against the other and constant bickering. You may have realised that today's post is only a short one and that is, of course, because Thursday nights are a bit of a busy time for me and sometimes I am able to pre-write long posts and times where I have tests and essays coming up I do not have time to do all this. You guys are actually pretty lucky I still manage to reach my daily post quota at times. So yeah, I thought I would give you all a break from Politics today (see that 'smooth' transition back on topic) and so the series will continue in two days and I am pretty sure we are already past half-way through the parties so there should really only be two or three more. Hope you guys enjoy the rest of your week, it's Friday tomorrow!

Can't wait for Friday, see you tomorrow!

Tired

So there was meant to be a normal post tonight but since I was out with Family I had pre-written a post and scheduled it for release at around 6pm. However, I get home and find that somehow I have messed up the dates and scheduled it for release next Wednesday. So I will see what I can do with that post such that it might come out tomorrow or another time. Tonight though I am just too tired to have to worry about that so that is why today's post is just a paragraph. If there was ever a post I wrote about Daily Blogger  Problems this would be one. That actually sounds like a good topic so expect to see that sometime soon. I'll have to finish this post now as I can feel myself starting to fall asleep.

Getting enough sleep is very important for your overall wellbeing, see you tomorrow.

50 Posts

If you didn't know this is the 50th Post on this blog and so today I just wanted to look back on some of my old posts as well as share some statistics along the way. This blog started on the 24th March 2013 (Sunday) and the first post was an introduction. I never expected my Blog to get this many views already and as I went to get the link for the first post I became the 1500th view. This is pretty cool because I expected I would get pretty low views around the teens if I was lucky and that it would take me 6 months before I could even think about making 1500 views. It only actually took until the 3rd of May when I hit 1000 views. This was just over a month since I started and I couldn't believe it. So today's post is for all my readers and thank you so much for coming back.

When I first started this blog I was lucky to get 10 views a day but now I get an average of 45 (talk about a rise). The highest amount of views I ever got in one day was 74 and that was also the day that I got over the 1000 views mark. The good thing about my views is that I never get below 40 a day anymore which is quite an achievement and which also means that I must get some people who read my blog regularly (not necessarily daily) and to those people I say thank you. If it wasn't for this I don't know how long I could have stayed motivated to write daily posts. I did miss a few days at the start of April because I was away but now I have mastered the scheduling tool which means that if I am busy or unable to write a post on a certain day I can write one in advance and schedule it for release on that day. I have done this numerous times recently and it really does help me keep this Daily Blog Daily.

Sometimes I wonder how I manage to keep writing my daily posts sometimes when my workload gets very high (which it does). Some of my friends have even asked me this question. The truth is I don't actually know how I manage it. I made a commitment when I made this blog that I would write regularly in it and I've tried to stick to this commitment as much as I can. By now it has become just a part of my daily routine. Get home from school, do homework, have dinner, finish homework, write blog post, relax, get ready for bed, go to sleep. It just seems normal to me now that I don't really think about it as a chore, I just sort of thing about as something I have to do every night and find time for it. I don't even know how I come up with some of these topics I discuss. It generally comes from something that happened during the day. For instance, yesterday I discussed books because in the morning we had an author (Michael Pryor) come in to talk to us at Assembly. Sometimes I don't even think about what I'm going to write until I start and then it takes a few goes to find a topic I can actually make a post about. Sometimes I write a few introductions before I find the topic I am going to discuss. So I don't know how I keep up this blog, but I do and that is partly due to the motivation my viewers provide (in the form of views).

That's all for today and I really want to thank you all for viewing my blog and reading my posts. It really does mean a lot to me, especially when someone comments. I really enjoy that interaction with the readers.

For the 50th time: May the odds be ever in your favour, see you tomorrow!

Scheduling

Hey guys, just a quick update to tell you all that I have discovered the wonders of scheduling posts on Blogger! Yay! This means that I won't have any excuse not to post on a certain day because I can write a post before hand and then schedule it to come out on the day I won't be able to post. Of course, this also means that you guys will know I have gotten lazy if a post does not appear. However, this may also be to some unexpected circumstance (i.e. Family Illness) that prevented me from posting on that day.

Is it bad that I wanted to write "Y'all" above? I've been watching too many Americans on YouTube, especially Ellen (Degeneres) she always says "Y'all". Anwyay, aside from the "Y'all"s I just wanted to say that I had discovered the wonders that scheduling brings. So, you may have realised if you "liked" my page on Facebook or are a friend of my personal Facebook account that a recent post about Google Plus which I scheduled to be released. Here is a photo below of what it looked like in my Posts section of my Blogger Acount for Daily Lukey, sorry for the bad quality, it's a screen snapshot using the Snipper Tool.

The only problem with scheduling is it uses a different Time Zone but it tells you what time it thinks it is currently so from there I work out the time and date I want it released. So yeah, now I can use the scheduling feature of the Blogger and there will be less days I will miss out on, yay!

May the odds be ever in your favour, goodbye!
