Life Update

The last post I wrote that was not related to Kokoda was on the 14th of April which makes the fact that it was only 19 posts ago one of the reasons I jokingly changed the title of this blog to "The Not-so-Daily Lukey" which I will change back to "Daily Lukey" once I get back into the swing of things again. Anyway, the point of that little fact was to show how long it has been (almost 6 months ago [that's half a year!]) since I wrote a regular post. In that time a lot has happened (I think, we'll see when I get down to it) and so today's post is a little bit of an update on what has been going on.

So I wrote that introduction two days ago and now I am here, writing the rest of the post. Welcome to the world of procrastination. Except, I procrastinated by doing other work so it was not entirely wasteful procrastination. Could it even be called procrastination then? Anyway, school has been busy lately, especially since it is VCE, and with my 3/4 Methods exam just four weeks away the work is becoming more real as I get through more and more practice papers. I have done well in my SACs so I have that but I also need to do well in the exam if I want to get a good score so there comes that. The plus side is that in four weeks, I will no longer be doing Methods. Although I will miss it because I like mathematics, it will be nice to not have that as one of my hardest subjects anymore so I can focus more equally on my subjects, particularly the ones I am struggling with. I guess nothing much really has happened though since Kokoda, though I do feel I could use a random thought Friday post right now (wait, I moved that to Saturdays but anyway) because, as you can tell, my mind is all over the place right now. Nothing much really has happened though. We've had a catch-up with the Kokoda group, a presentation night for the whole leadership program plus some minor Rotary events we help out at but it has been a while since we have all been together again, I think we need to organise something. It is sad how people drift apart some times but hopefully we can organise another Relay for Life next year which can act as our reunion of sorts. I'm on my school's first SRC (this is only the school's fourth year) which was a great experience but is sadly drawing to a close as the new SRC representatives are elected for next year. One of the best things about being in a new school (aside from the new facilities) is the new traditions you get to create as well as the community feel you get from it. So, we may have only been around for almost a semester but it was great to set some of the grounding and actually have some input into things at the school and inputting student ideas. I had better finish now as I think you are all pretty much up to speed. Of course there are always the personal moments that occur but that is why this is the internet, and not my real life.

Hope to get another post out soon, see you soon!

My Kokoda Journey: I'm In!

As you know I am currently in Kokoda and so while I am away I have scheduled some posts to come out about my Kokoda experience. Yesterday I posted about how it all began but I can not link it as it has not been published at the time this post is been written. Anyway, today I continue with that story as well as discuss some of the emotions that I have been going through since joining the program and the emotions of what it is like to know that you are about to embark on the Kokoda trek. The start is a bit of a continuation from yesterday's but you should not have had to have read yesterday's post to understand this one. If you want, you can have a quick read now by scrolling down or after you read this post.

It was on the morning of that day that I realised something was going on, not that I had any idea what it was. I never something was happening as the assistant principal had found me before school to tell me to come to her office at the end of recess that day. I had no idea that it had anything to do with the Kokoda leadership program as it had been a while since I had submitted my application. I think it was the end of May or the start of June at this point, I still have my acceptance letter but I do not know exactly where it is and it is a lot of effort to pull everything out just to find the date. Anyway, so recess finally comes around after a whole morning of me thinking I am in some kind of trouble and I am waiting patiently in the seats next to the office. Then Caroline, the other girl who was chosen from my school, joins me and at first I think we are both in trouble as it still had not hit me that it was for the Kokoda group. Before the assistant principal comes out of her office, a police officer comes into the office and stands around waiting too. By this point I am running through everything I had done recently in my head trying to find something that was so bad that the police had become involved. However, the assistant principal came out to collect us and take us into the principle's office (making my nerves even worse) before the police officer could say anything to us. When we got in there they told us the news and gave us our acceptance letters and I was so happy I was not quite sure what to say. I mean, when someone gives you a life-changing opportunity like this, what can you say? They talked us through what was going to happen and we found out that the Kokoda trek was going to happen in April 2014 (they had originally planned to do it in October 2013 but they were not ready early enough and the track is also closed during that time as it is too wet and dangerous to hike the track). We then got some photos for the newsletter and were sent to class. I was so excited I could not wait to tell everyone. I texted Mum and Dad saying I had some really exciting news but I wanted to tell them in person. I think one of the first things I actually said to either of them was the news that I was accepted into the program. It was a very good day for me and I could not wait for what my life would be like over the next few months.

My life was going to change and I was ready for it. See you tomorrow.

The Random Questions Continue

I think I have finally come up with a segment idea for Mondays and do not worry, it is not about random questions. Since Monday nights are really busy for me as I have CFA as well as homework I thought that I needed something easy to do that would not interfere with any of that. My first thought was a No-Post Monday segment where Mondays would be a no-post day but, however, I decided against that idea. Instead, I am going to have a "Catch-Up Monday" segment. This segment summarises the posts of the previous week with links to the different ones so that you can catch up on anything you actually might want to read. It will also be shorter so you do not have to worry about taking a while reading it. I am going to start this segment next week and, as promised, am going to finish the rest of the random questions from last week. Click here for last week's questions and answers.

51. Have you ever won a trophy?
Yeah, I have won a few actually. I won a few through different Spelling Bees (I used to be quite the speller, emphasis on 'used to be'), some through school and others outside of school.

52. Are you a good cook?
Not really. I can cook some things but other things I also freak out about and over-think. Even simple things like 2-minute noodles took a while as I never quite understood what it meant by "bring to the boil". I mean, when is enough bubbles enough bubbles?

53. Do you know how to pump your own gas?
This is clearly an American questionnaire. Anyway, I do not have my driver's license yet but I do have my learner's. However, I still do not know how to fill up the petrol tank properly.

54. If you could meet any one person (from history or currently alive), who would it be?
I think I would like to meet Tina Fey in person as she just seems like such a funny person. I feel like I already answered a question with "Tina Fey" as the answer last week but, anyway.

55. Have you ever had to wear a uniform to school?
Yeah, this is definitely American. In Australia, it is weird to have a school without a uniform so yeah, I have worn a uniform to school.

56. Do you touch-type?
Please, I am way past touch-type. I get enough practice from writing these posts every day.

57. What's under your bed?
Under my bed there is a chest of drawers, an exercise ball, an old piano stool, a CD player and a lot of other random junk.

58. Do you believe in love at first sight?
I do not actually know. For some people it may be possible in some weird circumstances but I really do not know.

59. Think fast, what do you like right now?
Lady Gaga. That was the first thing that came into my head. Probably because the last thing I saw on Facebook before I started writing this post was a picture of her.

60. Where were you on Valentine's Day?
Home, writing a blog post most likely.

61. What time do you get up?
I normally wake up at 7am on a school day or 6:30 when I have to get my own way to school. On a weekend it depends on what I am doing as to when I wake up.

62. What was the name of your first pet?
Ginger, he was our cat. His colour was ginger. My dog's name is Sandy, he is a sandy colour. We are very creative people.

63. Who is the second last person to call you?
One of my friends, her name is Heidi.

64. Is there anything going on this weekend?
I have music as usual on Saturday and than hiking on Sunday as part of training for Kokoda. I do not know if I am doing anything else.

65. How are you feeling right now?
Well, I have a runny nose that will not stop but apart from that I am pretty happy.

66. What do you think about the most?
Probably school work and what I have in terms of homework and classes. I do not really keep track of what I am thinking and for how long so I would not really know.

67. What time do you get up in the morning?
This is the same question as earlier just with another word at the end. If you want another answer, just look back.

68. If you had A Big Win in the Lottery, how long would you wait to tell people?
I am pretty sure that I would yell out in celebration and then, if no one was around, probably call  my parents or one of my friends and tell them the exciting news. Now I think about it, I may have just sent a quick group text to everyone on my contacts list before I call anyone.

69. Who would you tell first?
Probably my parents, then my friends.

70. What is the last movie that you saw at the cinema?
That would probably be Frozen.

71. Do you sing in the shower?
Who does not?

72. Which store would you choose to max out your credit card?
Who knows, probably somewhere like Big W or something where I could get a lot of things all in the one place. I know, I am such a cultured person. You do not need to tell me, I know.

73. What do you do most when you are bored?
Go on Facebook or YouTube.

74. What do you do for a living?
I am a student, I learn for a living.

75. Do you love your job?
I like school, if that could count for this question.

76. What did you want to be when you grew up?
I either want to be a Civil Engineer or a Lawyer. Even a career in IT would not be too bad.

77. If you could have any job, what would you want to do/be?
I do not know, I am still young. The answer is probably the same as above.

78. Which came first the chicken or the egg?
A circle has no beginning.

79. How many keys on your key ring?
Just two keys.

80. Where would you retire to?
Maybe Phillip Island or somewhere beautiful in the Mountains.

81. What kind of car do you drive?
I do not have a license.

82. What are your best physical features?
I just love myself so much it is hard to choose just one. Do not worry, I am just joking.

83. What are your best characteristics?
I do not like answering these sort of questions, they are more questions for other people.

84. If you could go anywhere in the world on vacation where would you go?
Paris

85. What kind of books do you like to read?
Mostly those set in dystopian futures, I really like some of those stories.

86. Where would you want to retire to?
This is the same as question 80, look above.

87. What is your favourite time of day?
Night time when I can finally go to sleep.

88. Where did you grow up?
In my home-town of Werribee.

89. How far away from your birthplace do you live now?
Well, I was born in Williamstown Hospital which is a thirty minute drive away so I guess that would count?

90. What are you reading now?
Twelve Angry Men by Reginald Rose for Literature

91. Are you a morning person or a night owl?
I am not actually sure. I like the night better than the morning but I still get grumpy when I am tired either way.

92. Can you touch your nose with your tongue.
I must look really weird right now but no, I can not.

93. Can you close your eyes and raise your eyebrows?
Now I look really weird but yes.

94. Do you have pets?
I have a dog named Sandy and two chickens.

95. How many rings before you answer the phone?
It depends on how long it takes for me to answer. I try to answer as quickly as possible but it depends on where it is.

96. What is your best childhood memory?
From when I was still in the single-digits it would have to be a family holiday to the Gold Coast.

97. What are some of the different jobs that you have had in your life?
Student, son and that is all.

98. Any new and exciting things that you would like to share?
Not really, you already know all about Kokoda.

99. What is most important in life?
Friends, Family and Happiness I think.

100. What inspires you?
People who try hard and fight through their difficulties and barriers to show that anything is possible.

That is all the random-ness I have for now so if you want more random you should probably check out my "Random Thought Saturday" posts. See you tomorrow!

The Week that Was: A New Segment!

Welcome to yet another Friday post. Generally, Fridays is a free-post day meaning that there is no segment (as Random Thought Fridays were moved to Saturdays) but today I am starting yet another new segment. This one is called "The Week that Was". In it, I go through some of the highlights of the week. These can be highlights in my life or in other areas. The reason I have so many segments is so that when it comes time to writing it is a lot easier to come up with something that I have not written about before. It also makes it a lot easier for you, my readers. If you know the type of posts that are going to be coming out on a day you can decide whether or not you want to read it. For instance, you may be interested in weird news and movies but not Doctor Who so you would read Tuesday and Thursday posts but would skip Sunday. See what I mean? Anyway, on with the week that was.

I can not discuss the week that was without bringing up the major international sporting event that has been running since last Friday. I am, of course, talking about the Sochi Winter Olympics in Russia. Australia may not be winning many medals but our athletes are giving it their all and that is enough for me. As long as they try their best and enjoy themselves I am fine. Being a part of the Olympics is such a big thing and there is only ever going to be one Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics. I am very proud of our Olympic athletes. Sure, Sochi may have its flaws but as long as our athletes are happy, we should be happy. There was sad news yesterday when a poor boy was killed by his father. Luke Batty was at cricket training with his father (who had separated from his mother and was visiting his son) when he was struck over the head with a cricket bat and stabbed several times with a knife by the last person you would expect; his own father. His father was later shot by police as he came running at them with his knife after repeatedly asking them to shoot him. It was a very tragic moment that shook the small town of Tyabb. His mother should be given a lot of credit however as she did say that no one loved her son more than his father and said that he must have been suffering from a mental condition. This is extremely positive considering that this was a violent man who had threatened to kill his ex-wife on several occasions and had numerous warrants out for his arrest. It showed great strength of character and was a very poignant moment. In my life a few things have been happening as of late. For one, I started school with a full course of VCE. If you do not already know my subjects for this year are; Methods 3/4, Literature 1/2, Physics 1/2, Legal Studies 1/2, IT Software Development 1/2, and General Maths (Standard) 1/2. This has partly been the explanation for the lack of posts over the past few days. VCE is a big two years that involves a lot of independent study and homework so for the next two years there will be times where I will miss out on posts and the many of those times will be because of homework and studying. Another reason why there has been a recent spate of missing posts is because I only received my school laptop yesterday and writing posts on the desktop computer I use is annoying as it is really old and takes a lot longer to type things out. Hopefully I will be getting my own personal laptop this year so this issue should not become as big a problem in the future; especially over the Christmas break where I have no school laptop.

That was the week that was. See you tomorrow!

Another Apology and a Hope

Again, I am sorry for the recent spate of short/missing posts. For reasons beyond my control, this blog has sadly been neglected over the past few days. For this I am incredibly sorry. I can not stress how sorry I am that this even occurs. I try hard to bring out daily content for all of you but some days are just too hard to get anything up. This is why I brought in things like Segments and Series so that I could schedule a few posts in advance to give myself some time off to catch up on homework. I am trying to keep this up but sometimes my life gets too busy with all these things going on but I am excited to bring you all new content. For example, I can not wait until April so I can share my Kokoda experience with you all, including the lead-up to the trek. However, there is a slight possibility that there may be a few days after the trek where you receive no posts. For this, I am apologetic but after hiking Kokoda I need a break. I will try to schedule as many posts as I can but there is only so much I can write between now and April. Anyway, all we can do is hope. After everything else is taken from us, we can still have hope. I hope that this blog returns to full-posts as my life returns to its normal school lifestyle.

I am very sorry, see you tomorrow!

Random Thought Saturday: A Hectic Week

Welcome to another random post here on Daily Lukey. You may have realised that the
"Random Thought Friday" segment has been moved to a Saturday and this is just for ease-of-posting reasons. Fridays are generally busy but on Saturday I do not have school so I do not have to worry about been too busy unless I am going away for the whole day or an extended period of time. Anyway, I wish to apologise (and since you can not stop me I am going to do it anyway) for the amount of short posts this week. Even though it was the last day of the year for school it was still a very busy one. For instance, on Monday I had school all day, then a pathologist's appointment, helping the PFA prepare for Speech Night and attending CFA so there was only a very short post explaining why there would only be some short posts this week. Tuesday, however, was a different story altogether. I had to leave home at 7am to go the Leadership Forum at MacRob in the morning and then went straight from there to Speech Night rehearsal when I never came home until after Speech Night was ended which was around 10:30pm. Even that I had to stay up a little later to have a shower so I never actually went to bed until 11pm and by this time I was so tired that any post I tried to write would make absolutely no sense. I would have scheduled a post to come out on this day but I only found out the day before (Monday) that I had to go to the Forum at MacRob and the only spare time I had on Monday night I spent preparing for the Forum with the other students from my school who were going. It was a very hectic week.

The busy week continued on Wednesday with my Piano Concert on that night. I was pretty awesome on stage (come on, I can dream can I not?) if I do say so myself and I played Gnossienne No. 3 by Erik Satie which is an awesome song by the way. Wow, I am using awesome too much today. Anyway, no matter how awesome I was it did not change the fact that I was still busy. Plus, at this time I was still freaking out about what the doctor meant when he wanted me to come in right away. The result was a lot of stress and a short-ish post. Thursday was yet another busy night even though it was the last day of school for the year. It was mainly busy because I finally went to see the Doctor (and was pleasantly surprised at the result [Fantastic]) and then on the way home we also did some shopping. As a result, the remainder of the night I spent preparing for Orientation Day the next day. By prepare I mean relax. By relax I mean sleep. Long story short, the day ended with another short post. Oddly enough, it was the longest post I have ever written on my phone which was a big achievement for me. It took me a while but it was worth it. Plus, it probably helped that I was not so tired that I just wanted it finished. Friday finally came around and I was able to relax for once. Orientation Day was over along with my time at school until the start of February. Well this post has changed from random to a week in the life of Luke. That should totally be a new segment! I just need to work out when to put it now though. Sunday, Tuesday and Saturday are taken and Wednesday, Monday and Friday are no good for me. By process of elimination I guess that this new series will most likely be posted on a Thursday. Keep an eye out over the coming weeks for this new segment! You read it here first, on Daily Lukey. Well, this is probably the only place you are going to read it on so anyway, enjoy the new segment. You may also notice a change in length of the posts which I post. This is not because I am getting lazy but because since I returned my School laptop I need to use the home computer. For some reason, the size of the words are different when I type them so it may seem like I am writing more when, in reality, I am writing less. I just want to apologise in advance for this.

Wow, so many new things to look forward to over the coming weeks. See you tomorrow!

What our Parents Taught Us

We may not realise it at the time but our Parents teach us a lot. Our Parents teach us things we may not glean from School. Some of what we learn may come into use later in our lives while most will not. However, it can be better to know more than you need to in case you do need it later in life. Although, most of the stuff our Parents teach us we just really want to forget right away. Most of what our Parents teach us is inadvertent and not what they want us to know.  Now I just want to say that what I am about to talk about DOES NOT all come from my Parents. A few of them maybe but I am not writing this about my Parents but about all Parents in general. Sorry in advance if I offend anyone.

The first thing that your Parents will teach you is that their word is law. Heaven forbid you ever break their laws. They brought you into this world and sure as hell can take you out of it. Later in life you realise that your Parents were wrong about many things and that not following their orders may have been the better option in some cases. However, when you are young you do not think about these things and think that all adults are always correct. Oh, to be a child... We also learn from an early age to always strive to "do your best". For some parents this can be as simple as just trying your best but for others trying your best means having to be at the top of the class. Second-best is not good enough for some Parents and I feel sorry for their children. How must they cope sometimes? Our Parents also taught us that we can be whatever we want. Well, except for a few jobs but we will not go there. Sometimes I think our Parents are setting us up to be rich so they can retire in comfort. That is actually a pretty good plan, must remember it in the future. So the lesson we can learn here from our Parents is have kids and retire happy, among other things of course.

Among other things our Parents also seem like very big religious advisers. Always going on about praying about one thing or another. Whether it be a stain coming out of the rug or a mark off the wall. Always we are reminded to pray or may "God help us". Religion must really be essential in raising families. Logic is also a big issue in our World and our Parents show us from an early age what logic is correct logic. We must always remember to do something because someone said so. That is all the logic we will ever need in our lives. We are also taught to empathise and be able to read someone's feelings. If we are not able to read feelings we may get on the nerves of certain people at certain times of the month. The ability to read feelings is always important when growing up as it allows us to know which rooms are safe to enter and which to avoid like the plague.

A major source of our Vocabulary is our Parents. Without our fathers we would not know what to say when we drop something on our toes. Where would we be if our mothers had not taught us what to say when we burn something? Then there are the words we say when we get a fright. Where would we be if our Parents had not taught us them? Persuasive Techniques are also learnt through our Parents so we already have a head start for English before we even reach High School. We learn especially about exaggeration and appeals to emotions as children as our Parents make us feel guilty about choosing something or whether they exaggerate how many times they have told us things. They are also experts at personifying and thank the heavens inanimate objects can not bite or I would be covered in marks for every time I forgot where something was. Put simply, our Parents teach us many things and for this we are eternally grateful.

May the odds be ever in your favour, see you tomorrow!

Community

Community (No, I do not mean the popular TV show) is something most people classify as history, no longer a part of today's multicultural environment. I beg to differ and I believe that Community is still alive today and I have seen examples of this everywhere. By Community I am not referring to buildings or any physical. I am talking about the social links between people in an area.

Just recently I had the pleasure of seeing this, just yesterday in fact. As you may have read yesterday I went to Relay for Life and there were so many people united to raise money for the Cancer Council. There were just so many people and there was such a good vibe around that it wasn't hard to see the sense of community.

There were so many different teams there, and they were all happy to be there even though they could have been spending their weekend doing something else. There were Fire Brigades, School Groups, Paramedics, work groups and other community groups who all had busy tents and full teams. Then there was also all the teams who also sold raffle tickets, food, lollies (yeah, I know lollies are food) and those beads and necklaces and everybody was smiling and were talking to other teams like they had known each other for years. So there was a really vibrant sense of community at this event and like all other Relay for Life events that I had attended. I really enjoyed my time and that was partly due to the sense of community I felt at every part of the track, it really gives you hope for the world. NOTE: These photos are from Relay for Life 2012 and are from the Wyndham Relay for Life Facebook Page.

May the odds be ever in your favour, see you tomorrow!

Relay for Life Reflection

So today, as you would have read yesterday, was Relay for Life. I'm not going to go into what Relay for Life is again so just click here to go to yesterday's post to read about it. So it started off at that temperature which is hot and cold at the same time. So I came wearing shorts, a CFA top and my CFA jacket to keep warm. Then, upon registering, you receive a Relay for Life T-shirt. Each year the T-shirt is a different colour and this year it was Purple which was cool since Purple is my favourite colour.

So the first lap of Relay for Life is for people with Cancer or who have previously had Cancer, they are called 'Survivors' and wear a purple sash throughout Relay for Life that has 'Survivor' written on it (not as in the TV-Show). They call this lap the "Survivors Lap". The second lap is when the people who look after, or who have looked after, a person with Cancer joins in. They are called the 'Carers' and this lap is called the "Carers Lap". The third lap is where everyone can join in and is called the "Family Lap" and so from here on in the Relay has started for everybody.

There is a team that is always there (I think they're called "Happy Feet") who sell these plastic necklaces (this year it was green) for $5 and then every lap they give you a bead (this year it was green for one lap, blue for every 5 laps, silver for 50 and gold for 100) for free which is cool and they would make a lot of money out of it because there are so many people participating in Relay for Life and almost everybody has one. This money is put towards the team fundraising total and is donated to the Cancer Council so it is not for profit. So here is a photo of me holding my necklace after my first three laps.

So I then continued for a few more laps until I got to this and had a break to get a drink. In this photo I was at 15 laps.

Then I just continued doing laps for a while and the time just slipped away until I got to around 30 (taking me 2 hours, 400 metres a lap and I was moving fast) where I started thinking about getting that little bit further and aiming for 50 laps. It took me a while and I finally reached 50 and my legs were killing me (walking non-stop for 4 hours can do that) but I pushed on and took this photo. I was very happy because I had reached my goal (the year before I had done 119 laps but I was there for the full 24 hours that time and I only reached 100 laps at 3am [yes, AM]). Here is a photo of my 50 beads, you can see the silver bead at the top.

So then I really had to have a rest because my legs were killing me and so I sat down for the first time for the whole Relay for Life and before we knew it I had to go home because my Dad had to drop my grandmother off on the way home. My middle brother is staying over night but I did it last year and unless I am doing it with my school it is not worth it. I mean last year I came home, had a shower and then fell asleep until dinner time (from 2pm to 7pm) and then I went back to bed and fell asleep and didn't wake up until 8am the next morning (I had no school) so you can see why I didn't want to do that again unless I could stay up and have fun with friends from school. So, all in all, Relay for Life was really fun (I say was even though it doesn't finish until 12pm tomorrow) and now I am relaxing and making this post. I ended up finishing on 52 laps before leaving (working out to just over 20.8km)

May the odds be ever in your favour, goodbye!

Relay for Life

So, as I mentioned in Yesterday's post, tomorrow I will be doing Relay for Life although I will not be doing the full 24 hours (as I did last year) but instead will be going on the Thursday and then coming home that night because my Dad has to work the next day and Mum won't be able to pick me and my eldest brother, who has his licence, is unreliable so it should be fun.

Relay For Life is a 24-hour relay where you go in teams of up to 10 and for 24 hours someone on your team must be on the track at all times carrying a baton for your team (this can be any item (appropriate!) that your team chooses). Each team raises money and all the funds raised (as well as registration costs) goes straight to  the Cancer Council. Last year I did it with my school and before that I had done it with the local CFA (Country Fire Authority). This year my school isn't participating because they didn't want to 'detract' from The World's Greatest Shave which was a big fundraiser at our school (well, we fundraised for it at our school). This year I will be competing with the Werribee CFA and it should be fun.

I will probably be able to blog tomorrow night because I won't be staying at the track for the full 24 hours but I might not be able to post tomorrow depending on the time I return. This is just a quick warning about the possibility of me missing tomorrow's post. So yeah, Relay for Life should be a lot of fun and I can't wait!

May the odds be ever in your favour, see you tomorrow!
